ABOUT ME

Greetings and welcome to Sacred Roots Wellness! My name is Tanya Henderson, and I am deeply honored to bring to you a healing practice that incorporates food, herbs and yoga as daily medicine.

I’ve had the honor of working with individuals as young as 2 and old as 93 years of age, crediting nature and its blessings as the greatest healer- one which impacts my work in immeasurable ways. As I continue to grow my relationship with nature, socially constructed and finite notions of what’s possible in the realm of healing morph into oceans of possibility.

My ultimate goal in working with individuals is to inspire them to their personal best by offering up the healing tools and resources I’ve found to be healing and self-empowering over the years.

I found my way into the world of holistic health and earth-based wisdom amidst New York City living, a hectic career in journalism and a serious need for balance. This road to self-healing led me down an undeniable path to embody wellness, inviting others to do the same.

When this healing path chose me, I packed my bags for California, leaving New York City behind, and never turned back. I have been working in the healing arts since 2006, having earned my certifications in Clinical Western Herbalism and Holistic Nutrition at the Ohlone Center for Herbal Studies and Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition & Culinary Arts.

My love for nature has been my inspiration for raising awareness around integrative health & wellness by incorporating traditional modes of healing into modern day lifestyles by way of the plants. Using herbs in the diet as both food and medicine has afforded me many opportunities, including the 8 years I spent teaching nutrition-based cooking classes to students and families within the Berkeley Unified School District and, more recently, as founder of the Women of Color Herbal & Healing Retreat and co-founder of the late California Women of Color Herbal Symposium.

As I have continued on my journey, inner peace and self-care have become increasingly essential to doing my work well. I earned my yoga teacher certification from the Niroga Institute where my passion for bridging spirituality and social justice blossomed.

In addition to working in private practice with nutritional and herbal medicine, I am nourished by teaching yoga to youth in marginalized communities of color as well as some private and studio classes.

In my down time, you are likely to find me hiking the trails of Oakland or mixing up herbal remedies in my kitchen for my herbal product line, Sacred Roots Botanicals.

I hope you will find Sacred Roots Wellness a sanctuary for your healing and look forward to working with you soon!
